Common injuries and lubrication recommendations of large open gears

First, wear

Wear is refers to a slow loss of material caused by mechanical, chemical, or other factors, and the gear surface changes. It can be divided into: 

A. Normal wear 

This wear occurs in the early stages of gear operation, the machining marks on rough open gear surface gradually disappear and the tooth surface appear light state, it is often called running-in wear. 

B. Abrasive wear 

The abrasive wear refers to hard particles mixed in the lubricant (such as sand, corrosion, material, metal impurities, etc.)  which make the meshing tooth surface material lost or misplaced in the relative motion. 

C. Over-wearing 

It dues to long-term use poor-performance lubricants of bad wear resistance and high friction coefficient, large sliding frictions make tooth surfaces rapidly wear so that shorten the gear life. 

Second, abrasions 

The abrasions refers to too much contact pressure on gear surface, deficient lubricant pressure performance or insufficient lubricant on tooth surface lead to the lubricant film cannot be established, and the gear is in dry friction or boundary friction condition so that the meshing tooth surface directly contact and result in the removal of gear material. 

Third, scuffing 

Scuffing is due to gear withstands large contact pressure or high tooth surface temperature, resulting in the lubricant film cannot be established; the uneven peak and valley in the tooth surface local get high-pressure welding when contacts, and then with the relative movement of the tooth surface, it promotes panel point plasticity deformation and rupture, resulting in the loss and migration of the tooth surface materials. 

Four, pitting corrosion and spalling 

For pitting corrosion damage, it is necessary to inhibit the emerging of developing source-- cracks. In different operational phase of the open gear, lubrication can prevent the emergence of pitting. 

Five, plastic deformation 

The plastic deformation of tooth are caused by tooth receives a large load. Plastic deformation of the tooth can be divided into two categories: plastic deformation of tooth body and plastic deformation of tooth surface. The former is due to the tooth materials stand stress superior to the elastic limit, the latter is also related to friction condition besides high stress.
